LANDSCAPE MATTERS
“To achieve good landscapes for our new ways of living we must deliberately design new settings to suit our new land-uses…and if they are to be valid and therefore viable they must be created in terms not of the past but of our new industrial condition.”
Nan Fairbrother; New Lives, New Landscapes; Penguin,1972
As observed by the far-sighted Landscape Architect and Writer Nan Fairbrother almost fifty years ago, we are living in an age of rapid and accelerating change in the landscapes of Britain and other developing countries which started with the Industrial Revolution and shows no sign of abating in the foreseeable future. As Nan Fairbrother recognised, we cannot turn our backs on these advances, nor can we live in an imagined or fondly remembered past. We believe it is our role as landscape architects to help ensure that any development which does take place respects the landscape; is well – sited, sustainable and designed in a sensitive manner which demonstrates a detailed understanding of the innate qualities of the landscape in question whilst facilitating the practical requirements of both the developer and user.
